ENDLESS CITY
Digital prints (85x160cm)
Exhibited at Gallery 1313, Toronto
By stitching together the figure ground plans of many cities we divorce the buildings and blocks from their natural settings and erase geographical features and political boundaries. Taking the last two centuries of compulsive urbanization to a hyperbolic conclusion, these collages imagine a future where world cities have expanded until they form a single, infinite urban entity. The work is dystopian about current urban sprawl, yet optimistic about the ability to discern singularity and difference between the individual cities within the conglomeration.
Divorcing the buildings and blocks from their natural settings and thereby erasing geographical features, ENDLESS CITY focuses on the parallels between urban environments. It prompts the viewer to discover the shared traits and the differences between the cities.
Concurrently, taking the last two centuries of compulsive urbanization to a hyperbolic conclusion, ENDLESS CITY imagines a future where all the world’s cities have expanded until they form a single, infinite urban fabric.
